* Music of the New World (all concerts with asterix above are part of this tour)
Click here to help support travel costs for the American tour.

A three week Southeast Asia tour in May and June 2009, will offer me the opportunity for cultural/musical exchange. Japanese pianist Azusa Hokugo and I will both be featured soloists on the trip, but will also have the opportunity to present smaller recitals. In these recitals in several Asia Countries we will be sharing the rich musical legacy of the Americas and at the same time searching for interesting music written for western instruments by Asian composers to bring back to the USA to complete the cultural/musical exchange. Prior to our Asia tour will be performing a preview of our Asia recitals around Montana, New York and New England.

We will be performing a program entitled "Music of the New World". The evening will be an exploration of North and South American musical styles that were the result of the unique blend of at least two different cultures. These cello and piano works of the late 19th and 20th century will range from a romantic sonata by Massachusetts composer Arthur Foote, the center piece of the evening, to Piazzola Tango's and a Milonga, Ginastera's Pampeana, and a "neobaroque" set of dances by Montana composer Eric Funk. We would briefly explore such threads as African rhythms, Spanish folk music and German romanticism in order to explain the rich and eclectic range of cello and piano works presented on this program.

Music in the Shadow of an Empire
The program will highlight music by composers from a similar time period who lived and worked geographically and culturally on the fringes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Each one struggled in their own way to find a musical identity that had roots in their own folk culture but at the same time would be respected within the great Viennese tradition.
Phoenix Trio will take the audience on a cultural and political journey, putting into context the unique and compelling musical language of Kodaly, Janacek, Bartok and Dvorak.

Program
Bartok Romanian Dances
Janacek Fairy Tale
Kodaly Duo for violin and cello
Dvorak Trio in F minor
