This CD was created the same year that I first experienced Cuba. As a guest at the Cello Festival of Havana I was surrounded by a diversity of talented students, and performed in a Baroque Spanish monastery. Despite a dark history of slavery and imperialism, the rich music of the region tells a story of resilience with shared rhythms and harmonies, and cultural interchange. This album arises from this same impulse, with a primary motivation of giving voice to vibrantly colorful music. My hope is to reveal threads of musical connection that build bridges across language and politics.
